The first step in preparing the surface of galvanized steel coils for painting is thorough cleaning. This process helps to remove dirt, dust, oil, grease, and other contaminants that may be present on the surface.
Degreasing
Galvanized steel coils may have oil or grease residues from the manufacturing process or handling. These residues can significantly affect paint adhesion. To remove them, a degreaser can be used. There are various types of degreasers available, including solvent - based and water - based degreasers. Solvent - based degreasers are more effective in removing stubborn grease and oil, but they may pose environmental and safety risks. Water - based degreasers are more environmentally friendly and safer to use, but they may require more time and effort for complete removal of contaminants.
Apply the degreaser to the surface of the galvanized steel coil using a clean cloth, sponge, or sprayer. Allow the degreaser to sit on the surface for the recommended time (usually a few minutes) to break down the grease and oil. Then, rinse the surface thoroughly with clean water. Make sure to remove all traces of the degreaser, as any remaining residue can also affect paint adhesion.
Removing Dirt and Dust
After degreasing, the surface should be cleaned to remove dirt and dust. A mild detergent solution can be used for this purpose. Mix the detergent with water according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use a soft brush or sponge to scrub the surface gently. Pay special attention to corners and crevices where dirt may accumulate. Rinse the surface thoroughly with clean water to remove all the detergent and dirt.
